George Michael - Eh at Best!

So last night Lauren, her mother-in-law Cheryl, and I went to the George Michael kick-off concert. Before you pass judgement, I was given the tickets free from work. I, by no means, sought out these tickets.

Moving forward with the story, none of my San Diego friends were too interested in going and NO WAY was I dragging Nate to go (his response: "I just really have no desire to go.....sorry."). So I was excited when I mentioned it to my best friend, Lauren, and she said she'd go. She'd have to drive from LA to do it, but she was up for it. Woohoo! Then while Lauren was at a Father's Day dinner with her in-laws, Cheryl, her mother-in-law mentioned how she HAD to go see George Michael, because he hasn't toured in 18 years, and he is soo good looking, and she just is such a big fan, etc. A quick call to me and it was planned. The 3 of us would go.

They drove down while I was at work. When I got home we had a delicious dinner and partly discussed what we were expecting. Expectations mostly revolved around what songs he'd sing and what he would look like. We expected something like this, just with some years added...

When we arrived about 15 mins early it was not crowded at all. Let's just say, good parking was still available. So there wasn't much of a crowd, but the few that were there were at least spirited in their love for Georgey (note: T-Shirts were running $45).

We got into our seats with about 10 mins to 8pm. A couple of things I forgot to mention: there would be NO opening act, the tickets said that the show would begin at 8pm PROMPT.

As I'm sure you can guess, the show did not start at 8pm, but 8:45pm. I have to say his stage was pretty cool with a huge TV screen that ran from the ceiling down the stage and stopped at the audience. He came out singing "Here I Am" and the crowd went wild. He voice was better than expected and I appreciated his dancing. BUT...

Slowly, I started realizing things that made me give the concert my mediocre review that titles this post. This is what I started noticing:

1. He was out of breath when he was singing. I chalk it up to not actually preparing for the concert. If you know you're going to be dancing a lot on tour, don't forget to hit the treadmill beforehand.
2. Because he was out of breath he would hold the mic up for the audience to sing a part of the song... I get it, artists do that, but 10 times in 1 song is a bit much. It reminds me of that joke when people are singing badly to a song, and you say, "who sings that?" They answer, "So and so," and you say, "Lets keep it that way." Well I just wish George Michael would have "[kept] it that way." you know?
3. He would drink water during a song. Yes, during.
4. After singing for an hour (starting late, remember) a big clock shows up for the screen. He had a 20 min intermission! REALLY Georgey?!?
5. He looked nothing like the George of his youth. He looked a lot like this, but worse.

Although I did have fun in the beginning, the intermission thing really drained my energy. My conscience started setting in and I came to the realization that I did not want to lose sleep over this mediocre performance.

I had driven with Lauren and Cheryl so I had to have Nate pick me up. Luckily, the first song after intermission was "Faith" so my night was complete after finally hearing the one song I really wanted to hear. I walked out of the concert early to meet my knight in shining Audi on the sidewalk.

A note to Georgey - hey, my dad is really enjoying retirement.. You should talk to him.
