I'm definitely showing these days, but I'm still at that awkward stage where people who don't know me may just think I have a thing for donuts. Really, I find this whole ballooning-thing hysterical and more than once I've caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and start laughing (which makes for a jiggling belly, which makes for more laughing). Luckily, I'm not someone who is bothered by the weight increase.. well, yet, anyways. If anything, I just hate not fitting into any pants. I have two pairs of prego pants and the rest of the time I use the Be Band (ahh.. the Be Band. Nothing like feeling like you are walking around with your pants undone :P).
Anyways, so earlier this week I ran into a woman I know through my credential program and our conversation went a little like this:
Her: "Hi, Nikki"
Me: "Oh, hi, _______"
Her: "Nikki, are you gaining weight?"
Me: "(very politely) Actually, I'm pregnant."
Her: "Oh, I thought so, but I didn't want to ask!!"
Really? You're comfortable enough to ask a person if they are gaining weight, but not comfortable to ask if they're pregnant. Interesting. Anyways, I found the whole conversation hilarious and I just wanted to tell you all one thing: If you see someone you know and you think they're pregnant.. Just let them tell you. However, if you are dying to know and really have to say something.... Just let them tell you.
This by no means hurt my feelings, but imagine if I WAS just gaining weight. Can you say awkward??

Don't worry - soon there will be no question about your "condition!"
People say the dumbest things! I've had some ignorant comments thrown in my direction. Some stuff, my jaw practically fell to the floor in disbelief about. You know, mostly stuff relating to adoption and infertility. And the funny thing... I always try and make it as not awkward as possible but what I really want (should) do is make it even more awkward so they realize they should think a little longer before speaking! But you're right it's really best to laugh it off!
And I keep meaning to comment and tell you how excited I am for you! Being a mom is a wild ride... And my bet is you'll be fantastic at it!
And I'm dying to find out if Charlie and Lucy will have a boy cousin or a girl cousin...
Your response should have been,"Yes I am gaining weight..." Awkward silence. "Soooo you wanna grab lunch?"
You could have said something like "Yes, and by the way, are you losing brain cells?" Can't believe how dumb some people are! Keep up the good work!
